Petronell Castle was built for the first time in the 11th century. The four-wing castle-palace complex that still exists today was designed by Dominio Carlone (around 1615 - 1679) on behalf of the Abensperg-Traun family. The castle is decorated with frescoes by Caprovo Tencalla. The old castle was set on fire by the Turkish army in 1683 and rebuilt in 1690 by Otto Ehrenreich I von Abensperg-Traun. Due to the fire, the ceiling structure collapsed and the frescoes were badly affected, Johann Bernhardt von Weillern dedicated himself to the restoration. Fortunately, both the architectural paintings by Tencalla and the frescoes were overpainted 80% of the time. Therefore, they have been preserved in very good condition. In 2011/12 the ceiling fresco was subsequently restored in great detail. After the reconstruction, the castle housed 17 generations of the Abensperg-Traun family. The showpieces in the castle are the knight's hall and the square courtyard with an exceptional pool in the middle. Among other things, a sala terrena is hidden inside the castle. The imposing state hall is located above. Not to be forgotten is the outside staircase, which is located in the courtyard under the clock tower with a conical roof. This was designed by the brothers Martin and Domenico Carlone. Between 1830 and 1850 the courtyard facade and the exterior facade were renovated.
