The construction of this church was begun in February 1904, with the project of the architect Giovanni Maria Cureta. The lower part of the church was completed in 1908 and dedicated to Mary the Savior of the Soul. The upper part of the church was built on several occasions.
The final appearance of the upper church facade was obtained in 1929, according to a project by Rijeka architect Kornelija Budinic. Budinic himself wrote about the project: "The church is of a basilic type, with three vessels, about 60 meters long, including the atrium above which a bell tower will be erected, and a width of 20 meters. 75 meters, the middle ship has a width of 10 meters and is separated from winged ships by five large arches. On the right side of the church there is an oratory that rises on the triangular surface".
In the upper church, the famous painter Romolo Venucci, has successfully carried out ceiling paintings and decorations. The sculptural decoration on the facade was made by the Venetian sculptor Urbano Bottasso and the Rijeka sculptor Antonio Marietti. The bell tower that was to be raised above the main facade was not realized, and because of this the foundations were burial eight meters in the rock. The entire building, a quality non-medieval architecture, is unique in the wider area of Rijeka and the region.
During the renovation of the year 2006, in the side lawns of the church were placed five new showcases depicting the characters of Croatian saints and Blessed; work, as well as the restoration of old sculptures by the academic painter Roberto Mijalic.
