The Dominican monastery in Ribe dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria, was founded in 1228 by Dominican monks on earth donated by Bishop Tuve of Ribe. The monastery church is built in Romanesque style. By 1246, the Dominican Order in Ribe had become so large and influential that regional meetings for the Dominican Order were held in the city. During the 14th century, the monastery was rebuilt and expanded with a larger church and a square extension, with rooms for monks allowing privacy. The new extensions were in Gothic style. In addition, they expanded with a larger basement. The Dominican Order consisted of monks who had chosen a life of chastity, abstinence and poverty, and were established in cities where the monks could go out and beg for the daily bread of the local residents. Their rules prohibited them from owning anything individually, but over the years donated property and land that could help support the monastery. The first Saint Catharine Church was founded in 1250, and is built in connection with a Dominican convent in the city. The present church dates from about 1450. King Christian the 1st gave a larger sum to the monastery in 1480. During the 16th century the construction of the church continued and was expanded. The church burned, but was rebuilt at the invitation of the pope.
