Tustan - a medieval castle and Customs of IX - XVI century, Old Rock defensive complex, the remains of which are located in the Ukrainian Carpathians (Eastern Beskydy), in Skole district, Lviv region, near the village Urich, south of the town of Borislav and southeast of the village Skhodnitsa. The unique monument of history, archeology, architecture and nature which is located among woodland and forest Pidhorodtsivskoho part of the State Historical and Cultural Reserve "Tustan."
Tustan was defensive and an administrative center and an important customs point on the salt road that led from Drohobych to Transcarpathia and Western Europe.
The oldest written mention of Tustan comes from 1340 and by Polish chronicler Janko z Charnkova which was working for Polish king Casimir III. That was in his chronicle, which covers events during the 1363-1384. Another Polish chronicler Jan Dlugosz (1415-1480), clearly states that in 1340 "King Casimir during one summer captured under his power all Rus'" Casimir ... the birthday of John the Baptist went to the Russian land and they seized towns and castles Przemysl, Galich, Lutsk, Volodymyr Sanok, Lubaczow, Terebovlya, Tustan other Russians city and fort ". Mentionings in these two chroniclers indicate that Tustan as a defensive fortress already existed before its capture by the Polish king in the XIV century. This is also shown by the data of archaeological research.
The oldest record of Tustan contained in the Bull of Pope Boniface IX on May 15, 1390. It refers to the transfer of Vladislav Opole city Rohatyn, castles in Olesko and Tustan with districts, farms, property and all lands and tithes salt in Drohobych and for newly established Zhydachev Galician Catholic diocese.
Besides defense and Tustan perform administrative functions and was the center of the parish. This is evidenced by the royal donation charter of the village Krushelnytsya on November 4, 1395. It states that the village Krushelnytsya Tustanskoyi parish, given as a gift faithful servants Ivan and Damian and their children with all the good ... of forests, meadows, nyvamy, meadows.
Subsequently, the fortress came under the power of the Polish magnates and gentry. Proof of this is to grant royal charter in 1539 at the request of King John of Tarnów gives Blizinsky Nikolai and his heirs "fortress Tustan, but actually only rock Stryjskyj in the mountains near the border with Hungary." They pledged to "own resources and activities mentioned in this castle rock defend, restore, strengthen and maintain in good condition." It is not known whether the castle Tustan repaired and strengthened, but in 1541 Blizynskyy gives village "Pidhorodtsi and fortress Tustan" to Jan from Tarnów.
What Tustan fortress existed up to and including XVI., Confirmed archaeological research materials and documents last known written mention of the castle dates back to 1565 she filed in Drohobych salt zhupy lustration. It states: "... in Tustan take a toll on buyers who go around the corner, passing Drohobych. Rental fee does ... 14 zlotys. "
