Old Vraa is a former main farm, which today is a hotel with park of 10.5 acre. The manor house has a moat with a suspension bridge in front.
Vraa was first mentioned in 1355 . The name means "small place". It was originally a number of farms inhabited by two foster families situated on the edge of Store Vildmose, then the largest tall moss in Denmark. The farmers farmed steers on the large meadows in Store Vildmose for export to the Netherlands along the Hærvejen. The king's men condemned the peasants for renouncing their farms after the Reformation together with Vendsyssel's monasteries and set up a royal estate, which in the 16th century was the largest of the district. The farmers' crime was that they could not prove their innocence during the rebellion led by Skipper Clement .
In about 1540 the king sold the farm to the Gyldenstierne family. It became Hans Johansen Lindenov the younger to Hundslundkloster, who in the 1620s began to gather the great Vraa freight complex. On December 28, 1624, Lindenov bought Vraa from Predbjørn Gyldenstierne's son-in-law Christen Grubbe to Lystrup. The successor continued to collect goods and the daughter-in-law, Mrs Kirstine Beck, who died in 1719, owned besides the estate in Kjær herred: Ellinggaard with Bannerslund, Heiselt, Aas and Lengsholm, a total of approx. 840 hp. and with mill-guilty, forest debt and teens 2140 th, the largest goods collection, Vendsyssel has seen, since the king after the Reformation confiscated the Catholic Church's goods.
The owners have, over time, had a close relationship with Ajstrup church which is located 3 km east of Old Vraa. They were thus the builders and owners of the church until modern times.
In 1812, the farm Ny Vraa was separated, and the rest of its adjacent was erected until approx. 1950th
Generations of landlords have dreamed of cultivating Store Vildmose by making a dam between Øland and Gjøl and pumping the water from Vendsyssel's largest river: Ryå in the Limfjord so the bog could dry out and become a piece of fantastic agricultural land. It was the development around the First World War with major crises that caused the Danish government to decide that now the dream should be realized. Thus, it became possible to grow e.g. cereals and potatoes on Old Vraas land, where a transition served as a training center for potato growers.
The current two-storey main building was built in 1645 by the heir of Ide Hansdatter Lindenov and her husband Finance Minister Steen Beck. You still see their initials over the entrance. The building is also adorned with many of the subsequent persons' initials.
The main building was rebuilt and two side wings built in 1779. Ajstrup Church was built in a similar style and with some of the same initials at Ajstrup town 4 km east of Old Vraa by the same people.
Chris Hillingsøe made Old Vraa a hotel in 1977 and added two towers. This deprived the site of its preservation when it was considered that the place was no longer up-to-date and thus not worthy of preservation. However, there is still a building called the Waalmester building which has the highest conservation value. In the year 2000, hotel guests only got 1.5 km to the motorway access at Tylstrup on the Hirtshals motorway . The real estate company, which owned the castle, came under pressure during the financial crisis, went bankrupt in November 2008 and was put on sale. In 2009, the castle was sold to Vraa Slotshotel ApS for DKK 14 million. The company is owned by the Lokdam family, which via the chain Danske Slotshoteller also owns Store Restrup Slotshotel and more. The hotel has now been named "Vraa Slotshotel", as of 2017 it has 43 rooms.
