The castle is the biggest attraction of Sevnica. It was mentioned for the first time in 1309 as the "castellum" of Lichtenwald and it was most likely built XII century. We do not know anything about the appearance of the castle at this time. The only preserved element of this period is the part of the tower, which is now included in the eastern residential wing of the castle. The tower probably did not stand alone, and after the thickness of its walls (2.6 m) it can be assumed that it originally reached the height of four or five floors.

Viktor Tiller in his manual "Sevnica i okolica" from 1938 mentions that the castle was connected with the Lower Castle at that time with the underground corridor, which still stands today at the Main Square in Sevnica. The corridor is supposed to be used by the inhabitants as a hideaway from the Turks . However, there are no historically reliable sources on the existence of this corridor, therefore we must add this story to legends. Also it is not known that the Turks would have ever been in Sevnica. During its history the castle changed many owners. After the II World War, the castle was nationalized and the poor families settled in the castle, which contributed to the destruction of property. In the 1960s, such attitude began to change. The poor families then gradually moved out from the castle. The awareness of the importance of the Lutheran Basement also woke up, and between 1963 and 1973 the frescoes were depicted that depict the scenes from the Bible and are today the greatest decoration and value of this building. Now the castle is used as museum, conference and wedding hall, concert hall and for other events.
