When we were going to spend our holidays in Sri Lanka, I was looking for a place where I can swim in the ocean. But I found there are not too much such places in this country. Every day several quite big sea turtles swim to the beach and people feed them from the hands. You can see this on the photo and video. It was a very exciting entertainment free of charge. And one late evening we were having a dinner on the beach few hundred meters South from Chaaya Tranz/ HikkaTranz hotel and saw a turtle coming from the water and laying her eggs in the sand just about 10 meters from our table. You can imagine how we were amazed.
If you like, you can also enjoy reef snorkeling by swimming on your own or you can get further for snorkeling with locals on their boats for some fee. Honestly speaking the snorkeling here would be not so amazing in terms of coral or fish after Red Sea but still you can enjoy it.
If you want surfing you can do it outside of the reefs or in nearby Narigama Beach.
