Caroli Church was completed in 1880 after drawings by Emil Viktor Langlet, but had begun in 1879 when the older Caroli church was demolished. Caroli Church was sold in autumn 2009; buyers were the owner of the nearby mall Caroli City.
In the 17th century many Germans lived in Malmö. To attend worship, they went across the strait to German churches in Copenhagen. After the Roskilde Peace in 1658, it became impossible. The Malmö Germans then decided to build their own church in Malmö. The church was built after Charles XI granted permission to form his own German congregation. On October 1, 1693, a German church named Caroli Church was inaugurated. It was in the Caroli Quarter at present Caroli City . However, the environment has changed considerably since then, when medieval streets that have gone near the church disappeared during the 1970s. Until 1778, the services were held in German only. After 1831, all the worship services were held in Swedish.
In 1879, it was decided to demolish the old Caroli church and that the congregation would be completely Swedish. One reason was that the church was simply too small when the congregation grew. At the same time, the church of St. Pauli was built since it came to the conclusion that the construction of Caroli church would be quite costly. It was decided to instead build both churches "for the same amount". On December 19, 1880, Bishop Wilhelm Flensburg was able to open the new Swedish Caroli Church, which was designed by Stockholm architect Emil Viktor Langlet. He was also the one who designed the Church of Saint Pauli. You can see the similarities when comparing St. Paul's Church and Caroli Church. The shape of the churches is the same and both churches are high metal roofs and pointed towers. This building type is called central church and is inspired by the Eastern round churches. Baptismal font, pulpit , altar and the place of choir and organ find well collected. From this, Caroli Church is a bit different, when you have placed the organ poster in the west while the altar, the pulpit and the baptismal font have their places in the east.
Caroli parish within the Swedish Church ceased in 1949. There was talk that the church would become free church or that it would be used as a residential building. The decision was that the church should remain. An association named Caroli Church Friends was allowed to attend church. 2000-2009 the church was rented out to the Academy of Music in Malmö, which held concerts in the premises.
Church Building
The church is in red brick with a mint green tile roof. There is a tower in the middle of the church that has a Greek cross at the top. In the brick on the outside of the church, there are some tablets over Frans Suell and his wife Anna Suell. About Frans Suell says that he was a successful merchant and entrepreneur. If Anna Suell says it: "She was not overconfident in the days of happiness. With the power of mind, its changeability, thought wisely, acted nobly. Lived and died as a true Christian."
