The so called castle is a rock which is traversed by numerous underground corridors and rooms, which today are mostly spilled or impassable. They served as living quarters, in Byzantine times also as monasteries. Many rooms are connected to each other by tunnels, passages and stairs. Most of the rooms on the north side of the castle are in use as pigeon houses. Farmers used them to collect the droppings of pigeons which are excellent natural fertilizer for vineyards and orchards.
The place was first mentioned in a chronicle of the 14th century by Aziz Ibn Ardasir. This castle is a major tourist attraction of the area.
Uchisar is situated at the highest point of this area and the top of the Uchisar Castle gives a spectacular panorama of the surrounding area.
