The church gained popularity due to the fact that inside it were filmed key episodes of the Soviet movie "VIY" (Eyelids) according to the story of Nikolay Gogol. These shots were not included in the final version of the film, but the scenery of the corresponding scenes, shot in the Mosfilm Pavilion, generally repeats the interiors of St. George's Church.
