The legend says that the church was built by a skipper at sea, who promised to build a chapel if he was saved.
The church is located on the 30 m high cliff. It was inaugurated in 1357, but the sea undermined the cliff, and in 1928 the church's chancel and part of the cemetery crashed into the sea.
In the 17th century, the cliff had begun to rub itself into the cemetery with the macabre result that coffins and skeletons stuck out of the cliff. In 1910, the church was abandoned, with another 18 years before the fate gathered the building.

On March 16, 1928 at five o'clock in the morning, a cliffslide happened at Højerup. This has happened both before and since, but this cliffslide was special because it took the choir from Højerup gl. Church in the fall.
The partially crashed church quickly became an opening piece. In the course of three days, around 40,000 people visited Højerup. Everyone was fascinated by the dramatic sight of a torn church and the sad remnants of cows, altars, tombstones, chests and skeletons on the beach. Soon after the crash, it was decided to secure the church for further downfall. Today, the church prides itself on the outermost clinker edge, and the missing cow has been replaced by a view terrace that gives a fantastic view of cliffs and sea.
The church was therefore replaced by Højerup Church.
The church is now stretched out towards the cliff with a viewing balcony where the choir once was.
