Sharganska osmica (means Shargan's Eight) is a unique historical narrow-gauge railway, passing between Mokra Gora and Shargan-Vitasi. A popular tourist attraction is one of the so-called Seven Serbian Wonders.
The construction of the railway between the village Mokra Gora and the Shargan Pass began in 1916 as part of a large project to connect Bosnia and Serbia with the railway, connecting Visegrad, Belgrade, Uzice. The construction was hampered by difficult terrain, the road ran through high gorges and sharp cliffs - first-class specialists were involved in the development of the project, who had to find appropriate technical solutions to the terrain. The track gauge was 760 mm, as narrow-gauge railways were significantly cheaper in this situation and better met the requirements. During the construction, 5 bridges and 22 tunnels were built, and the total length of the route was 58 km.
The road was named "Eight", because when seen from above on one of the segments, it formed a figure similar to the 8 - such an unusual shape is dictated by a significant difference in height (about 300 m) with frequent curves. The first train passed it in 1925.
In 1974, the road had to be closed due to low profitability, but in 1998 the authorities decided to restore it, making it a tourist attraction. At first, the restoration work was carried out exclusively by a group of enthusiasts, they attracted public attention and were able to establish funding from various sources, including the project under the control of the Serbian Ministry of Tourism and Serbia. As a result, in 2003, the Shargan Eight tourist route was opened, with a length of 15.5 km.
Today the road has turned into a full-fledged museum-tourist and architectural complex, every day there are 3-4 retro-trains with passenger cars passing Serbian territory through four stations (Mokra-Gora, Yatare, Golubici, Shargan-kakasi). On Sundays the train visits Bosnia. The communication is carried out all year round (in winter the route is shortened). On the way back, the train stops periodically so that tourists can take pictures of the most picturesque places.
