Podčetrtek Castle is situated on the hill above Podčetrtek town. This settlement was named after the fourth day of the week ‘Thursday’, when market and judiciary day took place under the castle rules. Podčetrtek Castle was first mentioned at the beginning of the 13th century, although the hill was built earlier. From 1479 to 1490, the castle was owned by the Hungarians. Later, in 1612, the castle was bought by the Tattenbachs, who were its masters until 1671. Until the end of the Second World War the Podčetrtek Castle was owned by Attems. After 1945, the castle became a state property and was gradually completely ruined. The Castle changed several owners, and there were also apartments in it. After the earthquake in 1974, the Institute for Monument Protection in Celje renewed its roof, while the local investors built a part of the destroyed eastern wall and performed other urgent tasks. Once a mighty building it is now privately owned. Near the castle there is also the famous Olimje monastery and the third oldest pharmacy in Europe and the popular thermal spa Terme Olimia where you can afford relaxation and rest.
