The market is a place where a weekly market took place in the past.In the years 1731-1853 in the middle there was a Baroquetown hall.Nowadays there are beer gardens, shops, restaurants and service outlets as well as a municipal library on the square, sport and cultural events take place here.
The square was rebuilt several times, in 1905 there was a greenery in the middle, and on it a monument of Emperor Frederick III with fountains at his side. The square also served as a hub for public transport (including streetcar). The last reconstruction took place in 1996 - the pavement was changed, trees were planted, benches were set up and stylistic lighting was made, a fountain was built in the middle, car traffic was limited.
The market houses a lot of historic buildings, most interesting of them are:
"Kamienica pod Kotwicą": corner house built in 1799, in the Baroque-Classicist style, the facade has the inscription "MDCCXCIX", on the ground floor there are threearcades, the elevation is divided by pilasters with Ionic heads. It owes its name to the anchor situated at the top of the tenement house. The anchorwas a symbol of the trade unions of Wałbrzych with the overseas countries.
"Tenement under three roses": built in the Baroque style, it was built in 1777.It is a tenement house with arcades, three storeys. It owes its name to three stucco roses located on the front facade.
"Tenement under four Atlantes": the headquarters of theLibrary of the Atlantes was located there. It was built in 1791-1793 in the classical style, rebuilt in 1856.The tenement house was built for the urban treasurer and wine merchant JW Röllsch, formerly a wine cellar in which Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was located. The name of the tenement house is derived from fouratlants located on the facade at the level of the second storey.
